THE ISLAND OF B.A.D. KIDS

A Theatre Arts School of San Diego Studios production, THE ISLAND OF B.A.D. KIDS is highly innovative mini-series film which features 25 emerging digital theatre, animation, and visual artists. Developed by Courtney Corey with an original EDM (electronic dance music) score by Matthew Armstrong, THE ISLAND OF B.A.D. KIDS explores the lives of young people navigating the 2020 pandemic crisis.

The story begins the second week of March, as news arrives that schools are being shut down. Students leave school with unresolved feelings, unfinished projects, and their plans for the remainder of the school year are unknown. Many of them feel BAD. They are castaway to their islands (their homes), shut off from friends, teachers, and their community. After braving the swell of the initial storm, the waters calm, and they learn to use the resources on their islands. They discover art and music, which helps them connect with the outside world. And, pretty soon, their bad feelings reside and they learn they are BEAUTIFUL, BOLD, BRAVE / AWESOME, AUTHENTIC, AMAZING / DARING, DYNAMIC, and DOPE.

THE CREATIVE PROCESS

This project was rehearsed and filmed remotely. Director Courtney Corey worked with the cast for five months via Zoom sessions. Composer Matthew Armstrong wrote an original score of 7 songs for the project which the cast learned in rehearsals and recorded at home. Students were taught how to utilize their technology in order to record audio files and film video sequences. They participated in art sessions and developed both digital and traditional projects which are utilized in the film. The film was edited in San Diego and Los Angeles.
